Once again, our affiliate technology provider Fulton Innovation impresses crowds at the most sought after electronics show in the world: CES. First was the eSpring, our water purifier that has a UV disinfection element powered without a physical wired connection – the first commercially available product that used inductive charging technology. Now, Fulton Innovation has unveiled technology that will let us charge electric cars without wires too!

Visit to Guangzhou Factory by Olympic Medalists

On 18 November 2010, the Chinese gymnastics team caused an unprecedented sensation at the Amway China plant in Guangzhou. Fans packed a meeting area to see these sports stars, who have been fans and spokespersons for our Nutrilite brand since 2009. As an aside, Hong Kong IBOs who have achieved 12% or above in the past 3 months will be able to visit our Guangzhou plant courtesy of our suppliers.

This was the first time the champions visited Amway China, where they were greeted by Amway employees, business owners and middle school students sponsored by Amway China.

It’s quite understandable why the team was so warmly welcomed. In the 2010 Asian Games this month, they won 13 events in the artistic gymnastics competition and medaled in eight others.

After the meeting, the team visited the Amway and Nutrilite Experience Centers and the Nutrilite production lines, so they could better understand Amway’s history and culture and how their supplements are manufactured.

An American Model

Steve Forbes, 2005: The U.S. lost a great entrepreneur when Jay Van Andel died at the age of 80 this past December. He was cofounder of Amway, a company that began in his basement and is today a $6 billion, globe-girdling behemoth. Amway is one of the world’s largest direct-sales companies, with approximately 3 million distributors worldwide selling a wide variety of products. It is also a formidable manufacturer of many of those items. Van Andel and his business partner, Richard DeVos, had tried several ventures before founding Amway. As true entrepreneurs, they learned early on how difficult achieving success can be.

Van Andel was also a noteworthy philanthropist. One of his legacies is the Van Andel Research Institute, which helps finance research in a range of health issues, including cancer. He also contributed generously to a number of civic projects. He was a supporter of think tanks, such as the Heritage Foundation (on whose board I sit), that have helped make conservatism such a positive, dynamic force in our country today.

Whether in business or philanthropy, Van Andel understood that the primary goal was to serve the needs and wants of other people. He exemplified the best of America.

Amway heads the technological front

Our partner company Amway is striving to come up with a pair of products, possibly functional foods and cosmetics, based on Korea’s cutting-edge technologies by 2012 under a scheme dubbed the Open Innovation Project.

Over in the USA, Business Review will present its Lifetime Achievement Award for Innovation to Amway to honour the 50-year-old company’s innovative business model and long history of innovation. Our partner is the second-largest privately held company in the region, employing 4,000 in West Michigan.
